Witchcraft 901. Protecting the Community is a Priority.
Don't let them distract you with nonsense witchy discourse, our taxes are paying for this genocide.
To clarify
I commonly use the words bruja or brujo to properly refer to folk-witch practitioners from certain regions that believe and practice completely differently from "traditional witchcraft" or "modern witchcraft". Anyway, if the situation requires it, I could use the word witch as a bigger umbrella to cover different aspects of the craft.
We're now in the middle of 2025, and just as in every era, there's a distraction amidst the chaos, a circus full of poorly made-up and unfunny clowns to attend to instead of focusing on what's important. This year is testing us as a collective, now more than ever. And while some witches and wizards are doing the magical work they need, whether privately or publicly (either to inspire others to follow in their footsteps, or simply for attention), there are others out there, as there always will be, who seem to have been sent by Loki himself, just to cause chaos and confusion, and keep you distracted from the bigger picture.
The Chaos creating the witches
The current administration leading the United States is doing everything in its power to achieve its goal of a literal racial cleansing, and they are (also) doing everything in their power to achieve it, removing laws that protect the most disadvantaged, physically removing immigrants and people of color, with or without papers, with or without green cards, with or without warrants, with or without legal authorization, with or without criminal records, based completely and entirely on their skin color, the clothes they wear, the places they frequent (especially Home Depot and other businesses), or the language they speak.
Our taxes, paid with hard-working money, are financing, against our will, prisons and concentration camps in different parts of the country and around the world. Human beings (immigrants and citizens) who have been living in the USA for over 10 years legally are being arrested in raids by uniformed, masked, armed men, and in public, without even warrants or criminal justification, our neighbors, farmers, babysitters, dishwashers, teachers, friends, pastry chefs, bakers, ranchers, and nurses, are being kidnapped in broad daylight and on camera, without any shame, and those in power are justifying it without any hard evidence just saying over and over "they are all criminals", even against people who have been living in the USA for decades and paying taxes and not hold any criminal records.
Just as I wrote at the beginning of my book 'Dream Witchery'*, specifically in the disclaimer, where I come from, witches don't waste time asking questions to help you. If they know you need help, even if it's a prayer or lighting a candle in your name, they do it. No one looks at you drowning and asks if you want help; they simply run into the water and assist you. That arrogant and ignorant idea of modern culture is selling you that you should first consult with someone "to work on their energy" while that person is in need, such a stupid waste of time and empathy, a ridiculous idea, obviously Western culture at its maximum potential.
It seems the gods of chaos have agreed on this, thinking "how can we keep those with the power to change the course of things busy?" and then created this whole trend of online discourse, and the worst aspects of traditional witchcraft, especially those that keep you blind to power and your potential.
The Role of Witchcraft
On the one hand, we have witches everywhere, from all traditions, backgrounds, and origins, seeking to free and encourage the oppressed with prayers, spells, rituals, and incantations. And on the other, we have pseudo-witches calling themselves "the authentic ones", just drinking wine and convincing you to buy things you don't need, especially books, overpriced crystals, and decks, with money you don't have (ironically these witches always praise socialism), to impress people online who don't even know that you exist, and drinking more wine all night while discussing other people's practices, traditions, and rituals, for literal hours, instead of investing their time into teaching you how to use your tools in the craft to empower others, to free and protect the oppressed, to guide the weak, to inspire the outsiders, to remind the outcasts, the trans, the immigrant, the women losing their rights, that they are not alone in this fight.
In a self-absorbed society that rewards narcissists and elevates every white hero for simply writing and posting online their fake support for minorities, Witches, the real ones, have an ethical obligation to fulfill their purpose in the name of the oppressed, in the name of their gods and deities, to take some actions in the name of their pantheon, whatever it is publicly or privately. Witches should be offering help and inspiration, healing and protection to others, especially the less fortunate.
After all, Witchcraft and Brujeria don't come from best-selling books, nor are they written by white American influencers, or British, even if they have all the time and resources to invest into convincing you of that. Witchcraft is a compilation of sacred mysteries taken from old religions and minorities, especially minorities. Every charm, every crystal's use, every herbal recipe, and every divination method comes from a different ethnic group or from a minority. That's not a secret.
What matters is
Unfortunately, in the year 2025, we are living in an era where any white witch only comes by offering a Reiki session as useful as "thoughts and prayers." May the gods forbid us from spending an hour a day discussing things that matter, or lighting candles and casting spells to protect our communities and neighbors in danger.
I only hope our gods judge us individually, by our true actions and the intentions in our hearts, and not by the things we pretend to have to impress others online, or by our number of followers, also online. Because witchcraft is a powerful tool in the hands of those who seek to make changes for the better, and nothing but waste in the hands of those who only seek to have online chats, judging others based on screenshots, or who only follow orders, never discussing their purpose, like cattle in a cult, especially in this age of small personality cults disguised as covens where critical thinking isn't even welcome.
May those gods of your pantheon judge your actions and the truth of your character, and that when you stand before them and are questioned about how you used your tools and knowledge, you feel free of remorse when you answer, and not filled with shame for your lack of action.
At this point in my life, and in all honesty, as an immigrant witch, and proud of my heritage, and even prouder of my path, each post I write while living in America hits me like it could be the last one. And that's a reality I have been trying to accept.
There's that boring, over-and-over-repeated Western idea of constantly questioning whether witches are born or simply turning into witches, a boring, unnecessary debate from privileged people to push others into the public eye, questioning their craft because there's nothing privileged people love more than external validation, except, oritcizing others for gaining more validation than themselves.
This debate always reminds me of my mother, who is descended from brujas, who learned to read cards and coffee cups thanks to Uncle Antonio (her uncle), and who never used the words in over 60 years of "I come from..."; those words never crossed her lips. She always considered that brujas were "created" (yes, her words, not mine, but I honor those words as my mantra) by otherworldly forces. She claimed that brujas were "forged at birth," forged by the chaos of a society when it collapses.

You don't choose to be a witch, you don't get born a witch, society forces you to be one, the uncertain times force you to learn, you can resist, or you can let yourself be broken into pieces, and reborn as a witch.

A love-inspired spell burning green sage, dragon root, ginger, mint, and roses to summon protection over our loved ones on Friday, the day astrologically dedicated to Venus. |
Unlike modern times, and the popularization of "modern witchcraft" on TikTok, before #InstagramWitches, and before Facebook groups focused on discussing witchcraft, there were already witches out there mixing potions, conjuring the elements, making pacts with all sorts of spirits and deities, learning and practicing (for real) all sorts of incantations and spells for different purposes.
These witches didn't do it for external validation, for Facebook likes, to create small virtual cults entirely focused on persecuting those who hate or dislike being different, nor did they do it to spread their ideas of racism and transphobia in small, masked circles like Coven(s) while just drinking wine.
Those witches did it because they had a purpose greater than themselves. Witchcraft itself and its preservation were their purpose, back in the days when it was more important to learn how to practice five or six spells and memorize how to work with just seven or eight local plants than to collect a hundred books by the same author, mentioning how to work with 200 different plants that not even the author had ever worked with in person, usually based solely on appropriation from other cultures. But hey, we love a white privileged woman from Delaware or New Jersey teaching us Voodoo from New Orleans.

*Don't be surprised when my book stops appearing in bookstores in the next few months. I wouldn't be surprised, after all, as my former editor at Red Wheel Weiser told me once, most of these stores are white-owned, and "that's the reason" why all forewords and most endorsements on a book must be made by white men. If your ideas don't align with white nationalists, ironically, in this case, when we are talking about witchcraft, your books will soon be leaving the stores. Thinking on that while we go deeper into a pro-Christian nationalist society.
